Lydney, which has existed since Roman times, covers approx. 8 square miles between the Forest of Dean and the Severn Estury. The town stands on the A48 road between Gloucester and Chepstow. Lydney was the home of Sir William Wintour, Admiral of the Fleet of Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1588, and it was from here that many of the ships to oppose the Spanish Armada were built from the Forest of Dean oak trees.

Lydney is situated within easy reach of a great many interesting places to visit in the forest of Dean, from the Wye Valley and Symmonds Yat in the west, to the beautiful forest walks themselves.
